How is it installed?

At least two adults are required to install mezzanines, (they do not need to be DIY professionals). It is recommended to use safety equipment such as gloves, boots, etc., to avoid any accidents.

For the mezzanine floors in the L and XL range, a scaffolding or ladder system may be required for work at height and manual or electric lifting equipment for the primary beams, especially if the structure is over 3 m high. All other ranges are easily lifted by hand.

You will need the following tools to install the mezzanines: tape measure, a spanner set for nuts and bolts and a screwdriver (an electric screwdriver makes the job much easier), a spirit level, hammer, drill and a cutting tool for the board (handsaw, jigsaw, circular saw...).

This video shows you how to install a TM 15 mezzanine.

Do I have to ask for a building permit or license to assemble my mezzanine?

No, you don’t. Our products are completely removable and reusable, therefore, they are considered as PERSONAL PROPERTY.

The mezzanines with an industrial usage require neither a building license for their assembly nor meeting the maximum constructed surface limits of the pavillion. As they are removable and hence personal property, they are subject to the same legal regime as the machinery, the racks, the vehicles, etc.

Which mezzanine is the right for me?
The key to choosing the right mezzanine is to be sure of how you will be using it.

If you want to use it at home, whether in a cosy bedroom, in a relaxing living room or in a garage to create extra space, you should consider the S or M ranges. The mezzanine of these ranges allow you to create a raised area between 63" to 10 3/4" high.

If you want to extend a commercial space, add a balcony to your garden or create a second storey warehouse or a large garage, we recommend the L mezzanines. From 82 1/4" to 134 5/8" high.

XL mezzanines are for larger projects. For example, you can fit out industrial premises or increase your company's productivity and storage capacity. These mezzanines range in height from 92 1/2" to 149 1/2".

Once you know how you want to use your mezzanine, the next step is to fine-tune the details such as height, area and load capacity so that it fits your project perfectly. You can also add stairs, railings and other accessories.

Can I install the mezzanine in my apartment? Will the structural floor bear the weight?

Yes. As they are manufactured with light steel profiles with a high yield point they are very light and the load per column is very low. The only restriction is the storage load on the mezzanine: instead of 40.96lb/ft², it may be reduced to 1764lb for the whole mezzanine.

A home with a concrete structure usually supports a point load of at least 441lb on a surface of 2x2". The T8 mezzanine weighs 439lb and the T15 mezzanine weighs 785lb, both weights are distributed over 4 columns.

You can install either of these two metal mezzanines in your home, provided that the load stored on them is limited. Ask MezzaninesOnline about the specific features of your project.

Does the kit include the flooring boards?

Yes, the mezzanine floor is included.

For the S, M and L ranges we use 1/2" pine plywood structural panels, with tongue and groove joints on all four sides.

In the XL range, we use P5 HYDRO high-density particle board structural panels, with tongue and groove joints on all four sides and 3/4" thick.

Can the stairs be placed outdoors?

Yes, our products can be installed outdoors, although you should bear in mind a series of special considerations and carry out maintenance of the material to guarantee that they are in good condition. See this section for more details

Can the stairs be anchored to a mezzanine or construction wall?

Yes. They can be installed on a surface that is not a Mezzanines Oniline surface.

Wall anchors for concrete or brick are used to fix staircases to walls made of these materials.

The customer must bear in mind that they are responsible for the strength of the joint and structure to which they are anchored.

How are the stairs anchored to the top?

If you need to anchor the stairs to a structure that is not a MezzaninesOnline structure, see the following details about the anchors:

  • Anchor A: References that have this anchor: 30501, 30401, 31003, 31301, 31102
  • Anchor B: References that have this anchor:
  • Anchor C: References that have this anchor: 30601, 30801

Can I install a mezzanine outdoors?

MezzaninesOnline products can be installed outdoors (in the open), provided that the following considerations are taken into account, which define the structural, environmental and material maintenance calculation conditions.

Products with wooden components and load-bearing floors can be installed outdoors or in humid environments when a specific waterproofing treatment for wood is applied and maintenance is carried out on a regular basis.

It is not advisable to install products with electrical components outdoors.

If you want to install MezzaninesOnline products outdoors or in humid environments, we recommend you to request the waterproof treatment that provides additional protection to the steel parts, increasing their durability against those atmospheric conditions that can cause corrosion.

Structural Calculation Considerations

Outdoor installation involves forces due to snow and wind, which depend on the geographical location, altitude of the site, etc. These actions have been taken into account in the calculation, with certain maximum values that must be compared with those of the area where it is installed, to ensure that these limits are not exceeded.

The value of the snow load corresponding to the zone must be subtracted from the use overload supported by the mezzanine to the dimensions that have been installed. As a guide value, MezzaninesOnline structures can be considered to withstand a minimum use overload of 200 kg/m², and therefore the load of snow that a mezzanine can withstand outdoors is very high.

The mezzanine can be installed as a canopy outdoors by installing the stability kit, contemplating the case of a complete obstruction when it is placed against a façade, or free if it allows air to pass through its lower part. wind speed of 100 km/h is taken as a reference. The regulations of each locality must be consulted to check that these limits are not exceeded.

Under no circumstances should the sides of the building be closed, as this implies greater horizontal forces that are not included in the calculation.

The columns of the mezzanine must be fixed to a solid base that resists the actions transmitted by the mezzanine. MezzaninesOnline offers guidance as to the type of footing or foundation required under the columns, but it is the customer's responsibility to check the final strength of the terrain.

When the mezzanine is required to be placed on a grass or soil type surface, some type of footing will be necessary. The modular foundation system shown below may be a good solution, although it is up to the client to check it through the technician responsible for the project https://piloedre.es/

Environmental conditions and performance of materials

The metallic steel pieces are lacquered with paints suitable for exteriors. MezzaninesOnline structures have a thermosetting polyester polymerised powder coating, with a coating thickness between 60 and 80 microns.

Corrosivity category C2 has been obtained, of medium durability, when submitting the pieces to the tests, according to the criteria of the European Norm EN ISO 12944 of May 1998: "Protection of steel structures against corrosion by means of protective painting systems". Examples of typical environments for corrosivity category C2:

● Interiors: buildings without heating where can be condensations (warehouses, sports centres,…)

● Outdoor: atmospheres with low pollution levels. Mostly, rural regions.

The medium durability of the lacquer covers a period of 5 to 15 years. The standard states that durability is NOT a "warranty period". Durability is a technical consideration that can help the owner establish a maintenance programme. That is, tests are performed for a specified number of hours under uniform conditions applied to smooth surfaces. The reality is that climatic and environmental conditions are very variable.

It is to be expected that after some time the structure requires retouches of painting on small zones, like edges or corners that can present beginning of oxidation and loss of the brightness. It is recommended to polish these areas to remove the rust and then apply the paint. The edges of steel parts are the parts most prone to corrosion and where rust first appears, in fact, these areas are not evaluated in salt spray tests, as the standard does not contemplate them.

MezzaninesOnline does not advise the use of metallic parts painted in white for exteriors, since the appearance of rust is appreciated much earlier than in black.

When the visual inspection indicates that paint retouching is required, careful attention should be paid to all edges or corners that may show signs of oxidation and loss of gloss. It is recommended to polish these areas to remove the rust and then apply the paint.

If the mezzanine is to be installed outdoors in a marine or coastal environment, maintenance recommendations should be carried out more frequently, due to the corrosive power produced by the existence of salt and moisture. Try to control the oxidation process to avoid further deterioration. In this case, it is recommended to polish the affected areas to remove the rust and then apply the paint.

The aluminium handrails of the rails do not require any special maintenance, as all of them are subjected to surface treatments that guarantee their outdoor performance (anodised silver, black lacquer or with a wood effect).

The load-bearing floor of MezzaninesOnline mezzanines consists of structural plywood panels. It is intended for indoor use in a humid or protected outdoor environment in accordance with EN 636-1-S. The customer must apply a lasur* or specific waterproofing treatment for wood to the floor and to the exposed edges, which protects the surface and prevents water from penetrating into the tongue and groove joints of the panels and affecting the edges.

Likewise, all wood pieces (steps, wooden strips, etc.) must be treated with some type of water-resistant paint or varnish to prevent moisture from penetrating and the material from cracking, and therefore losing its mechanical and aesthetic characteristics.

The wood pieces should also be maintained, checking that the applied surface protections (varnishes or paints) have not deteriorated, and treating them if necessary.

The presence of water in puddles or “ponds” on the mezzanine should be avoided. To that end, the mezzanine should be installed with a slight slope to facilitate the water evacuation and to avoid its accumulation (approximately 2%). This unevenness can be achieved by installing levelling plates under the highest pillars of the structure. Drains can also be created for the same purpose.

 * It is a product for outdoor uses that is more appropriate than varnish because it offers a high resistance, does not create a layer on the surface it is applied, controls humidity, gives a waxy finish and provides a wide range of finishes.

Waterproof treatment of Steel

This treatment provides the steel pieces an additional protection that increases their durability in weather conditions that cause corrosion.

It consists of a cold-dip galvanizing or electrolytic zinc coating, whereby the steel pieces are covered with a thin zinc layer, between 8 and 15 um, in a low temperature bath. Subsequently, it is added a passivation using chromium that increases the protection and, finally, a sealing is made.

This zinc coating process differs from cold-dip galvanizing and avoids the pieces from deformation by heat and their holes from blockage, providing a much softer and more appropriate finish for the use of Mezzanines Oniline products.

After applying the zinc coating, the pieces are lacquered with the high-quality standard process typical of Mezzanines Oniline, with powder-coating paint, to obtain a perfect finish in the colour desired by the customer, also increasing the corrosion protection by creating a barrier (steel + zinc plating + lacquering).

With the Mezzanines Oniline waterproof steel treatment, a high level of protection is achieved on steel parts, obtaining the following rating:

  • Corrosivity category C4 with Low durability.

  • Corrosivity category C3 with Medium durability

  • Corrosivity category C2 with High durability

Durability is obtained by testing the parts according to the criteria of the European Standard EN ISO 12944. The standard indicates that durability is NOT a "warranty period". Durability is a technical consideration that can help the owner to establish a maintenance programme. That is, tests are performed for a given number of hours under uniform conditions applied to smooth surfaces. The reality is that climatic and environmental conditions are highly variable.

It should be taken into consideration that the guarantee of our treatments is given on the basis of laboratory conditions, which are the hours without rust appearing in a salt fog chamber, but every real location may imply a different kind of exposure. Therefore, we provide an extract from the European standard EN ISO 12944 of May 1998 "Protection of steel structures against corrosion by means of protective paint systems", where you can see some examples of typical environments.

Before starting
You should understand that...

You can install a mezzanine without any construction work or special tools. You can install it yourself easily and safely. The most outstanding feature of the kits is that one structure can have multiple height, width and length configurations. They are mezzanines in kits, in modules, adjustable, extendable and customisable. The following demo videos show how they work.

More than one mezzanine suits my needs, which should I choose?

We might have various models of mezzanine that meet the dimensions you need. In this case, follow these criteria:

1- Load-bearing capacity

2- Maximum span (distance between columns)

3- Beam height

4- Height of the mezzanine above the decking you need

Mezzanines
What is the load bearing capacity of mezzanines?

At MezzaninesOnline we define the load evenly distributed per square metre. Therefore, the load capacity of mezzanines varies according to each model and its size. For detailed information on the load capacity of a particular mezzanine, we recommend  consulting the corresponding technical datasheet.

In the case of some sturdier models, such as the XL Range, we also define the admissible concentrated point loads. These loads depend to a large extent on the board we use as the mezzanine floor, as it is the component that directly receives the load. Specific information on point loads can be found in the product description.

What are the available colours and finishes for the mezzanines?

Steel parts such as frames, handrail posts and stair stringers are coated with an electrostatic polyester powder paint coating process for maximum adhesion, available in:

- White. Available from stock at no extra cost (RAL: 9016).

- Black. Available from stock at no extra cost (RAL: 9005).

- Any single-coat colour from the RAL range at additional cost and upon request. Please enquire about delivery times.

The mezzanines in the XL Range are available in:

- Yellow and black. Available from stock at no extra cost (RAL: 9005 and 1003).

- Any single-coat colour from the RAL range at an additional cost and upon request. Please enquire about delivery times.

This type of coating is perfect for indoor use. If you plan to install the mezzanine outdoors, we recommend consulting Can I install a mezzanine outdoors? This section contains  information and recommendations to consider in order to improve its performance and durability.

Extensions
Do they support the same weight as the main structure?

Yes. They have the exact same specifications as the initial structure.

Can I add an extension in the future?

Yes, you can add an extension to an existing mezzanine. You do not need to buy both structures at the same time.

Is it possible to install an extension in a mezzanine of a different range?

It is not possible to install an extension in a mezzanine from another range. The solution is to install two different mezzanines from different ranges side by side at the same height. In this case, you do not save on columns.

As long as the beams of both mezzanines have the same direction, you can extend the surface by using the flooring.

If, on the other hand, the beams of both structures do not follow the same pattern, you can install the flooring but not create a continuous surface. In this case the structures will function as independent mezzanines as the flooring will also have different directions. To create an aesthetic link between the two mezzanines, we recommend using vinyl flooring planks, carpet or any other material that provides continuity to the flooring.

Accesories
Are the accessories compatible with all the mezzanines?

Yes, they are. Unless otherwise specified in the accesory description.

Installation

How long does it take to install?

You can do it yourself with the help of a friend. It is easily installed in a few hours, depending on the product. The times are a guideline and for assembly only. You need to add the time it takes to measure up, move the components to the location, clean up, etc.

S Range: 4-6 hours with 2 people

M Range: 8-10 hours with 2 people

L Range: 15-22 hours with 2 people

XL Range: 25-28 hours with 2 people

The time required for fitting accessories (ladders, handrails...) could vary between 2-8 hours depending on the quantity, as well as the type/model of accessory.

Shipping
How is the product shipped and received?

The mezzanine floors are packed and shipped by an external agency in a lorry provided with a lifting platform, so that the boxes can be unloaded on the ground. The order will be delivered at street level to the address specified by the customer.

If there are access restrictions, there could be additional costs due to the necessity of transferring the merchandise to a smaller vehicle.

In order to deliver mezzanines XL, the delivery location should be accessible to a truck/long trailer. Should you think there is any kind of restriction, please contact us. The customer should take care of the merchandise unloading process. That unloading should be made from the lateral sides of the truck (this kind of truck does not have a back liftgate). We deliver the product packed with pallets at the bottom, so its unloading should be made preferably with a forklift.

How is the package and what are its dimensions?

At MezzaninesOnline, we offer four types of boxes that are carefully designed to adapt to and protect the products. Depending on the products in your order, you will receive one or the other.

Mezzanine floors in the S, M and L range are shipped in the same type of box. The S and M mezzanines require one crate for each shipment. The L range, however, normally requires two crates.

The XL mezzanines are shipped in two boxes; one for the wooden elements and one for the steel elements.

The rest of the products (stairs, handrails and other items) are shipped in smaller boxes.

How do I get the product up to my home?

Don't be alarmed by the total weight of the product, the components are light and manageable, so you can move them easily and take them up in the lift.  The heaviest components are the primary beams from the L range (86 lb), the rest of the ranges are considerably lighter (26.5 lb). The floor panels are very light and fit in any lift. No component is more than 94 1/2" long and therefore, fits in most lifts.

However, it is important to mention that in the case of the XL range, some components may be a little heavier.

About legislation
Do I have to ask for a building permit or license to assemble my mezzanine?

No, you don’t. Our products are completely removable and reusable, therefore, they are considered as PERSONAL PROPERTY.

The mezzanines with an industrial usage require neither a building license for their assembly nor meeting the maximum constructed surface limits of the pavillion. As they are removable and hence personal property, they are subject to the same legal regime as the machinery, the racks, the vehicles, etc.

MezzaninesOnline legal considerations

MezzaninesOnline Mezzanines are movable assets referred to in Article 335 of the spanish Civil Code: “all the items that can be transported from one place to another without detriment to the property to which they were attached are considered as movable assets”

Moreover, the article 334.3 of the same code excludes MezzaninesOnline mezzanines from the immovable property concept defining the later ones as “everything attached to the property in a fixed manner, that can not be separated from it without breaking the matter or deteriorating the object…”,

Every customer will have to make the opportune checks on the existing legal requirements of each country and/or region in regards to this type of structures. Aspects such as the use, the surface and the location of the mezzanine will need to be taken into account then.

Is it necessary to protect the mezzanine against the fire?

FIRE RESISTANCE OF THE MATERIALS INCLUDED IN MEZZANINES

Mezzanines are formed by several pieces of different materials and coatings, therefore the classification of the fire resistance (reaction to fire) is different depending on the material. This fire reaction classification of the construction products and building elements is defined in the european standard EN 13501-1, commonly called Euroclasses.

The classification of each material type used in mezzanines is indicated down below:

Steel pieces without treatment

A1

Steel pieces black-painted 9005 (polyester powder paint)

A-s1,d0

Steel pieces white-painted 9010 (polyester powder paint)

B-s2,d0

Boards of the supporting floor. Structural chipboard for humid environment P5 (EN 312-P5)

D-s2,d0

FIRE STABILITY OF MEZZANINES

Metallic mezzanines have a bearing structure formed by columns, steel primary beams and steel secondary beams, as well as steel connectors and screws. This structure is not endowed with neither any type of passive protection nor intumescent treatment. Because of that, a fire stability greater than the one provided by the steel on its own is not guaranteed (no longer than 10 minutes, according to the literature related to steel construction).

The fire stability requirement of a mezzanine during a certain time will be determined by the usage of it (above and under it). It is the responsibility of the owner to comply with the current legislation applicable in the town where the mezzanine is located. Depending on whether the mezzanine is installed in an industrial environment or in a domestic atmosphere, on its size, location, etc. the regulation can or not demand a certain fire stability to that bearing structure.

You can consult with Mezzanines Oniline technical department for further information.

Other questions
And in the future, what I can do with my mezzanine: extend it, reuse it, resell it,..?

The mezzanine can be extended at any time using any of the available extensions, or can modify the height of it.

You can also resell it or reuse it in a different location with different dimensions thanks to its telescopic system.

Design and manufacturing process

Our production line is oriented towards quality criteria, paying special attention to safety and functionality. Thanks to the close contact with our customers, we observe lots of upgrades, new products and needs that allow us to keep on improving.

Firstly, we conduct a market research, analyzing social needs and demands and observing existing products. Then, we think about the different alternatives, related to the possible options to be developed, from which we choose the most appropriate procedure. To develop the idea, we take into account the providers involved and the time planning.

The next step is the pre-design of the product, with the realization of diagrams and plans, the definition of preliminary characteristics and the estimation of costs. Next, a feasibility study is carried out and the prototype is designed. Then, calculations and assembly are carried out, with prototype plans, cuttings, choice of materials and finishes. After these stages in the manufacturing process, this first product is tested to verify the validation. If everything is correct, the prototype request is made, the technical and assembly documentation is developed, the prototype tests are carried out and the tests and installation are carried out, observing the possible problems of operation and assembly.

Once again, a validation test is carried out again and, if all the conclusions are optimal, the product is standardized with technical and commercial procedures. In the last phase of the process, the cuts are made, the products are coded and the manuals are designed. Then the descriptions are written, the images are designed and the videos of the products are edited. Finally, prices are established and proceeds to the start of the sale.
